BRENT GOOSE (Branta bernicla)

The Brent Goose, also known as the Brant Goose, is a member of the Branta genus.

There are three types of sub-species of Brent Goose, the Dark-bellied, the Pale-bellied and the Black Brent Goose.

The Brent Goose flies in loose flocks along the coast rather than tight skeins like Grey Geese.

Conservation Status


Size
550mm to 660mm (22" to 26")

Appearance - Male
The head, upper breast and neck are Black with a White collar round the neck and a short Black bill. The body is dark Grey/Brown with White flanks and a White under tail on a Black tail. The legs and feet are Black.

Appearance - Female
Similar to the male except slightly smaller.

Habitat
A coastal bird seen in tidal estuaries and slightly inland agricultural land.

Diet
Eel Grass, Seaweed, Sea Lettuce. Will also feed on Grass and Cereals further inland.

Breeding Time
June

Nest
Bowl shaped lined with grass and down in an elevated position.

Eggs
Quantity: 3 to 5
Colour: Creamy White.

Brent Goose
Breeding Habitat - Arctic Coast
Arctic Russia, Siberia, Northern Greenland, Arctic Canada and North America.
Winter Habitat or Migration Area
Winters in Southern and Eastern England, Ireland, Northumberland and Northern europe.
